Setting Up a VPN on Android TV and Fire TV

Set up ZoltVPN on Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV: install it, sign in with a remote, connect, and fix buffering and apps that misbehave on a VPN.

ZoltVPN has apps for Android TV, including Google TV devices, and for Amazon Fire TV. On Android TV, install ZoltVPN from Google Play on the TV; for Fire TV, follow the steps on our download page. Then sign in using the remote or a phone keyboard, accept Android's VPN connection request and press connect. For smooth streaming, use a wired connection or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi and leave the location on automatic or choose a nearby country. CyberPort AI, ZoltVPN's adaptive engine, handles the rest, as it does on your phone.

Before you start: which TV do you have?

Not every smart TV can run a VPN app. It depends on the operating system, not the brand on the front.

TV or deviceOperating systemCan it run ZoltVPN?
Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense and others with Google TV or Android TVAndroid TVYes, from Google Play
Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, many TV boxesAndroid TVYes, from Google Play
Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV smart TVsFire OSYes, see the download page
Samsung (Tizen) or LG (webOS) TVsTheir own systemsNo VPN apps; add an Android TV or Fire TV stick

If your TV can't run VPN apps, an inexpensive Android TV or Fire TV stick plugged into an HDMI port is the simplest route. It also tends to be faster and better supported than the TV's built-in apps.

Installing on Android TV and Google TV

  1. Open Google Play on the TV. On Google TV, go to the Apps tab and search.
  2. Search for ZoltVPN and select Install. Alternatively, open Google Play on your phone, find ZoltVPN and choose your TV from the list of devices to install it remotely.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Sign in. Typing with a remote is slow. Two easier options:
    • use the Google TV app on your phone as a remote, which gives you your phone's keyboard;
    • connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to the TV.
  5. Accept the connection request. The first time you connect, Android shows a "Connection request" message asking whether to allow ZoltVPN to set up a VPN. Choose OK. This is a standard Android safety step, not an error.
  6. Press connect.

Installing on Fire TV

Fire TV runs Fire OS, Amazon's version of Android. The current way to get ZoltVPN on Fire TV is explained step by step on our download page; open it on your phone or computer and follow it with the TV beside you. Once the app is installed:

  1. Open ZoltVPN from Your Apps & Channels, or from the apps row on the home screen.
  2. Sign in. The Amazon Fire TV app on your phone works as a remote with a keyboard, which makes typing your email and password much easier.
  3. Accept the VPN connection request when Fire TV asks.
  4. Press connect.

Getting smooth streaming

Use the strongest connection you can

TVs are often far from the router, behind furniture and walls. If your TV or stick has an Ethernet port, or supports an Ethernet adapter, use a cable. Otherwise, connect to your router's 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz.

Check your bandwidth

Streaming services publish their own guidance. Netflix, for example, recommends about 15 Mbps for 4K. Remember that everyone else in the house is sharing the same line; a large download on another device can make the TV buffer.

Choose the location sensibly

Leave the location on automatic, or pick a country close to you. A distant server adds delay and can lower video quality. Our article on why YouTube buffers on some VPNs explains the routing side.

Let CyberPort AI work

CyberPort AI chooses between 10 connection models based on your location, your internet provider and live performance, switches automatically when one is blocked or slow, and remembers what works on each network. On a TV, that means you set it up once and press connect from then on.

Keeping it working month after month

  • Turn on automatic app updates. On Android TV, open Google Play, go to your profile, then Settings and turn on auto-update. Updates can include improvements for new network behaviour.
  • After standby, check the connection. When a TV wakes up, it may rejoin Wi-Fi with a new address. If the app shows that it is disconnected, press connect again before you start watching.
  • Restart the stick now and then. Streaming sticks run for weeks without a reboot. Restarting from Settings clears memory and often fixes sluggish menus and buffering.
  • Keep the router close or wired. If the TV regularly loses Wi-Fi, the VPN has to reconnect each time. A cable or a mesh Wi-Fi point near the TV fixes both problems at once.

When apps misbehave on a VPN

  • Local apps may need a direct connection. Some local TV, sports or banking apps only work from inside your country. If one refuses to play, disconnect the VPN while you use it.
  • Cached location. Streaming apps sometimes remember the location they saw at sign-in. If an app shows the wrong content after you change location, close it fully or clear its cache under Settings → Apps.
  • Respect each service's terms. Streaming services set their own rules about where content may be watched. Our guide to streaming abroad with a VPN covers what to expect.

Who sets up a VPN on a TV?

  • Families in filtered countries, where video platforms are blocked or throttled and the TV is the main screen at home.
  • People living abroad who want a protected, reliable connection on the household's shared screen.
  • Households that already use ZoltVPN on phones and want the same protection in the living room.

The TV counts as one device on your account, like a phone or laptop. If you're setting up several screens at home, our guide to a VPN for the whole family helps you plan the device count, and the pricing page shows the current options.

FAQ

Does ZoltVPN work on Samsung or LG TVs?

Not directly. Samsung's Tizen and LG's webOS don't support VPN apps. Plug an Android TV or Fire TV stick into the TV and install ZoltVPN on that.

Can I use the same account as on my phone?

Yes. Sign in with the same account. The TV counts as one of the devices your plan includes.

Why does my TV show a "connection request" message?

Android and Fire OS ask for permission the first time any app sets up a VPN. Choose OK to allow ZoltVPN; you won't be asked every time.

The video buffers with the VPN on. What should I check?

Check your Wi-Fi signal first, or use a cable. Then make sure the location is set to automatic or a nearby country, and pause large downloads on other devices.
