Why ZoltVPN Runs on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud

Why ZoltVPN spreads its network across Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud: resilience when one path is blocked, capacity, reach and steady speed.

A world map with connection lines running through three cloud regions into a single VPN app.

ZoltVPN runs its servers on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud so that no single provider, data centre or group of addresses becomes a single point of failure. When one route is slow, congested or blocked in a particular country, CyberPort AI, ZoltVPN's adaptive connection engine, can move your connection elsewhere in seconds. Spreading the network this way also gives it the capacity to stay fast at busy hours and the reach to serve users on several continents. Today that means 100+ servers in 10 countries.

What "multi-cloud" means for a VPN

Many VPN services rent servers from one hosting company, often a low-cost one. That is simple and cheap, but it ties the whole service to one provider's network, one set of address ranges and one company's outages.

A multi-cloud VPN spreads its servers across several independent providers. For ZoltVPN those are Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud: three of the largest cloud platforms in the world, each with its own data centres, its own global backbone and its own connections to internet providers.

You don't choose a cloud when you use the app. You press connect, or pick a country, and CyberPort AI decides which connection model and which server suit your network at that moment.

Reason 1: resilience when one path is blocked

In countries with heavy filtering, censors don't only block protocols. They also block addresses, sometimes whole ranges belonging to a hosting company that many VPNs use. A VPN that lives on one provider can lose most of its servers in a single afternoon.

Spreading the network across three providers changes that equation. A block that affects one provider's addresses leaves the others untouched, and CyberPort AI can move users to a path that still works. Together with its 10 connection models, this gives the engine more ways to get through than any single server or protocol could offer. Our article on automatic connection switching shows how the switch itself works.

Reason 2: capacity and steady speed

Our network carries more than 500,000 active users and 100+ TB of traffic a day. Traffic like that doesn't arrive evenly: evenings, weekends and major events create sharp peaks. Large cloud platforms make it possible to add capacity where it is needed rather than running every server at its limit.

Speed also depends on the quality of the network around each server. In ZoltVPN's own speed tests, servers have exceeded 2 Gbps. Your own results will always depend on your line and device; our guide to testing VPN speed properly explains how to measure them fairly.

Reason 3: reach

ZoltVPN has servers in Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Denmark, the UK, Canada, the US and Japan, plus Iran for Iranian services. The large cloud providers run private backbones between their regions and connect directly with many internet providers, so traffic often reaches a server over fewer, better-managed hops than it would on a small hosting network.

For users, reach means two things: a location close enough to keep delay low, and enough choice that CyberPort AI can route around a congested or restricted path.

Reason 4: reliability

Every provider has incidents: a power issue in one data centre, a network fault in one region, a configuration mistake. They are rare, but they happen to everyone. When a service depends on a single provider, its users feel every one of them. With servers on three independent platforms, a problem at one provider affects only part of the network, and users can be moved to healthy servers.

How CyberPort AI uses the network

Infrastructure only helps if something uses it intelligently. CyberPort AI:

  • chooses between 10 connection models based on your location, your internet provider and live connection performance;
  • considers multiple servers, not just one, so a blocked or overloaded server doesn't take you offline;
  • switches automatically when the current path is blocked or slow, typically within seconds;
  • remembers what works on each network you use.

CyberPort technology is also deployed in the networks of major carriers and cloud providers, including Microsoft, AT&T and Bell Canada. You can read more about the engine in what is CyberPort AI and see what the apps offer on our features page.

In 2024, ZoltVPN was recognized by CNET and MIT Technology Review for its speed and reliability.

What this means for you day to day

Most of the time, you won't notice any of this, and that is the point. What you notice instead is that connecting usually works on the first try, evening speeds hold up better, and when a block or an outage hits, the app reconnects on its own rather than leaving you to search for a new server or config. For people in filtered countries, that difference shows up most during tense periods, when single-provider services tend to fail all at once.

What multi-cloud doesn't change

It is worth being clear about the limits.

  • Distance still matters. A server on another continent adds delay. Leave the location on automatic, or choose a nearby country, for the lowest delay.
  • Nothing is immune to blocking. Multi-cloud gives the network more ways around a block; it doesn't make blocks disappear. During severe shutdowns, when international connectivity is cut, no VPN can connect.
  • Your own line sets the ceiling. A fast server can't make a slow home connection faster than it is.

FAQ

Why not just use one big cloud provider?

One provider means one set of address ranges and one network. If a censor blocks that provider's addresses, or the provider has an outage, the whole service suffers. Three providers give the network independent routes to fall back on.

Can I choose a specific server location?

You can pick a country or leave the location on automatic. In both cases, CyberPort AI chooses the connection model and server that suit your network.

Does running on large clouds make the VPN faster?

It helps. Large clouds offer well-connected data centres, private backbones and room to add capacity at busy times. Your actual speed still depends on your own line, your device and the distance to the server.

Which countries have ZoltVPN servers?

Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Denmark, the UK, Canada, the US and Japan, plus Iran for Iranian services.
