Set up your VPN before you fly to China. Once you land in mainland China, you usually can't download VPN apps, reach the websites that sell them, or receive verification emails from blocked mail services, so the app needs to be installed, signed in and tested at home. Then decide how you will get online (roaming, a travel eSIM or a local SIM), save offline copies of the essentials, and note how to reach support by email. The checklist below covers each step. If you want the background on how filtering works in China, start with our practical guide to using a VPN in China.
Why you can't leave it until you land
Many travellers assume they can sort out internet access at the hotel. Four things make that hard:
- App stores. VPN apps aren't listed in the mainland China App Store, and Google Play isn't reachable.
- Websites. Many VPN providers' websites are blocked, so downloading or paying from inside the country can fail.
- Email. If your account uses a Gmail address, verification emails and password resets may not arrive while you are in China.
- Time. You will be tired, on unfamiliar networks, and possibly needing directions or messages urgently. That's the worst moment to troubleshoot.
The pre-flight checklist
| When | Task | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 weeks before | Choose a VPN and install it on every device you're taking | You can't easily download it later |
| 1–2 weeks before | Sign in and confirm your account email works | Password resets may not reach you in China |
| 1 week before | Connect on home Wi-Fi and on mobile data | Confirms the app works and you know how to use it |
| 1 week before | Decide: roaming, travel eSIM or local SIM | Affects how much you'll rely on the VPN |
| A few days before | Update the VPN app and your phone | Avoids needing a large update abroad |
| A few days before | Download offline maps and translation packs | Useful if any connection is slow |
| A few days before | Set up the local payment and messaging apps you'll need | Easier to verify at home |
| The day before | Save bookings, tickets and addresses offline | Screenshots work without a connection |
| The day before | Note the support email: [email protected] | Some messaging apps are blocked in China |
Plan your free trial around the trip
ZoltVPN's free trial lasts 7 days and needs no card. Use it at home to check that the app works on your devices. If your trip is longer than the trial, or starts after it ends, choose a plan before you leave. You can compare options on the pricing page.
Install on every device
Install on your phone, your tablet and your Mac if you're taking them. Sign in on each one and connect once. A laptop you forgot to set up is a laptop you can't use for anything blocked during the trip.
Roaming, travel eSIM or local SIM?
How you get online in China affects how much your VPN has to do. These are general patterns; always check the details with your own provider.
| Option | How traffic usually travels | Will you need a VPN? | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Often routed back through your home carrier | Sometimes less, but don't rely on it | Can be expensive; speeds vary |
| Travel eSIM | Depends on the eSIM provider's routing | Varies by provider | Check reviews and routing before buying |
| Local Chinese SIM | Through Chinese networks, fully filtered | Yes | Requires registration with your passport |
| Hotel or café Wi-Fi | Through Chinese networks, sometimes with extra restrictions | Yes | Quality varies a lot between hotels |
Even if you plan to rely on roaming, install the VPN anyway. Roaming can be costly, eSIM routing can change, and you will almost certainly join hotel Wi-Fi at some point.
On arrival: your first-day routine
- Connect once at the airport on mobile data or airport Wi-Fi to confirm everything works.
- Leave the connection on automatic. ZoltVPN's CyberPort AI chooses between 10 connection models based on your location, your provider and live performance, and switches automatically when one is blocked or slow.
- Be patient with the first connection. On a new network, the app may need a few extra seconds to find what works. After that, it remembers what works on each network, so the hotel Wi-Fi and your mobile data each reconnect faster next time.
- Repeat at the hotel. Join the hotel Wi-Fi, complete any sign-in page, then connect the VPN.
Users in China found ZoltVPN 30–40% faster than the leading VPN services in their own side-by-side tests. Your own speed will depend on your network and the time of day, but an engine that switches away from throttled paths has a clear advantage in China's networks. You can read more on our VPN for China page.
If you get cut off
- Switch networks. If hotel Wi-Fi is struggling, try mobile data, or the other way round.
- Restart the app. Disconnect, close the app, open it and connect again.
- Avoid running two VPNs. If your employer's VPN is installed, use one at a time.
- Contact support by email. Write to [email protected] with the network you're on and what you see.
Business travellers
Company laptops often come with a corporate VPN, and those can struggle in China because they typically use standard protocols that are easy to recognise. Check your employer's travel policy before your trip and ask your IT team what they recommend. Our guide to working behind strict networks covers what a VPN can and can't do in managed environments.
A note on the law
China's rules on VPNs and internet access are strict and can change. Travellers should follow local laws and regulations during their stay.
FAQ
Can I buy a VPN subscription once I'm in China?
It is much harder. Provider websites and payment pages may be blocked, and app stores don't list VPN apps. Buy and set up before you travel.
Do I need a VPN if I'm roaming with my home SIM?
Roaming data is often routed through your home carrier, so some services may work without a VPN. But it isn't guaranteed, it can be expensive, and you'll likely use hotel Wi-Fi too. Install a VPN anyway.
Will my VPN work on hotel Wi-Fi?
Usually, but hotel networks vary and some add their own restrictions. Complete the hotel's sign-in page first, then connect. If one network is very difficult, try mobile data.
How far ahead should I set up?
One to two weeks is ideal. That gives you time to install on every device, test on different networks and sort out any account issues.
