A business needs a dedicated static IP when something it relies on trusts traffic by address: admin panels and cloud consoles that only accept known IPs, partner or payment APIs that require registered addresses, remote staff who should always appear from one place, or services that keep challenging shared VPN addresses with CAPTCHAs and blocks. A static IP delivered through a VPN gives your authorised users the same fixed, exclusive exit address wherever they are working. ZoltVPN offers dedicated static IPs, residential or cloud, as a single address or a whole range, as part of its business services.
Dynamic, shared and dedicated static IPs
Every connection to the internet uses a public IP address. What matters for a business is who else uses that address and whether it changes.
| Type | Who uses it | Does it change? | Good for | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic ISP address | Your office or home line | Yes, from time to time | Everyday browsing | Can't be reliably allowlisted |
| Shared VPN address | Many VPN users at once | Can change | Privacy, access in filtered networks | CAPTCHAs, blocks, can't be allowlisted |
| Dedicated static IP | Only you or your team | No | Allowlisting, consistent reputation | Identifiable as yours by design |
A shared VPN address is the right tool for most personal use. The moment a system needs to know that a connection is yours, you need an address nobody else uses.
Signs your business needs one
1. You allowlist by IP
Many teams protect sensitive tools by accepting connections only from known addresses: server administration, content management admin pages, databases, network equipment, analytics dashboards. Cloud identity systems can also treat a "named location" differently, for example by asking for fewer extra checks from your office address. With a dynamic or shared address, you either open these tools to the world or lock out your own people.
2. Your team is remote or travels
When staff work from home, co-working spaces and hotels, each sign-in comes from a different address. Security systems flag these as unusual, and staff spend time clearing alerts. With a dedicated static IP, everyone appears from the same address, wherever they are.
3. Partners or payment providers require registered addresses
Some payment gateways, banking interfaces, logistics platforms and enterprise APIs only accept calls from addresses you have registered with them. A static IP lets your laptops, not only your servers, reach those systems.
4. Shared addresses keep getting challenged
If your team uses a consumer VPN, the services you use may see the same address used by many strangers. The result is CAPTCHAs, extra verification and sometimes blocked accounts. A dedicated address builds its own, cleaner history.
5. You work from filtered countries
Teams in countries with heavy filtering often need a VPN just to reach their own cloud tools. A dedicated static IP lets those connections arrive from one known address that your systems can allowlist.
How a static IP over a VPN works
Your team installs the VPN app on their devices and connects as usual. Instead of leaving the network through a shared address, their traffic leaves through your dedicated static IP. Your systems, partners and cloud tools see that one address, whichever city, network or country the employee is in. Our features page covers the apps your team will use.
For employees, almost nothing changes. They open the app on a laptop or phone and press connect, as they would with any VPN. For administrators, the change is significant: instead of maintaining a long list of home and office addresses that keep changing, you allowlist one address, or one range, and keep it. When someone joins, you give them VPN access; when they leave, you remove it.
Residential or cloud?
ZoltVPN offers both kinds of static IP.
- Cloud addresses belong to data-centre networks. They suit allowlisting, APIs, admin tools and most business software.
- Residential addresses belong to ordinary internet-provider networks. They suit services that treat data-centre addresses with suspicion.
If you're unsure, start from the services your team uses most and how they treat each type of address.
One address or a whole range?
A single address covers most small teams. A range makes sense when you need to:
- separate teams or functions, such as finance and support, so each has its own address and its own access rules;
- separate clients, if you're an agency managing accounts for several customers;
- keep reputations apart, so a problem with one activity doesn't affect the others;
- grow without re-registering addresses with every partner each time.
Good security practice with a static IP
A static IP is a strong filter, not a password. Use it alongside, never instead of, proper authentication.
- Keep multi-factor authentication on for every system, even allowlisted ones.
- Allowlist narrowly. Add the static IP only to the systems that need it.
- Keep a fallback. Make sure an administrator can still reach critical systems if the allowlist is misconfigured.
- Document where the address is used, so you can update every system if anything changes.
- Review access when people leave. Removing someone's VPN access removes their route to the allowlisted address.
Questions to ask any provider
- Is the address exclusively ours?
- Is it residential or cloud, and in which country?
- Can we get a range, and can it grow?
- How do our users connect to it, and on which devices?
- What support do we get if something stops working?

FAQ
Is a dedicated IP the same as a static IP?
They are often used together. "Static" means the address doesn't change; "dedicated" means only you use it. For allowlisting, you want both.
Does a static IP make us easier to identify?
Yes, by design. Services you use will recognise the address as yours. That is the point for allowlisting, but it means a dedicated address isn't meant for anonymous browsing.
Can employees in different countries share one static IP?
Yes. Each person connects through the VPN, and their traffic leaves through the same dedicated address wherever they are.
Do we still need passwords and multi-factor authentication?
Yes. A static IP limits where connections can come from. It doesn't prove who is connecting.
